Introduction to Pig Keeping Courses
Smallicombe Farm 'Introduction to Pig Keeping' courses as featured in the Telegraph will be designed for your specific requirements. You will not be in a large group of people and will be free to ask questions as the course progresses and have time for in depth discussions when required.
The courses are normally aimed at people who would like to rear pigs as a hobby or for those wishing to gain more knowledge around rearing and breeding pigs. Smallicombe is geared up to producing quality breeding stock, weaners and also Rare Breed pork, bacon, sausages and gammon which is sold locally at Markets and direct from the farm.
The 'Introduction to Pig Keeping ' course is an ideal start for any serious prospective pig keeper. The course will cover selecting your ideal pig from the different traditional breeds and Ian digs a little deeper by introducing you to their temperaments and attributes. It is important for you to be master of the pig and not the other way round! The introduction to the course is followed by an explanation and hands on examples of housing, rearing, breeding, feeding and pig husbandry. It will also cover all the legal requirements involved in keeping and moving pigs to ensure there is clear and full trace-ability.
Hands on pig keeping courses are held throughout the year where you will join Ian on a morning with the pigs. This will be fairly informal and can be arranged for individuals or small groups where you will be able to participate and to ask questions as you go along. These can be either at weekends or mid week.
The cost of the course is £75 per person plus £50 for each additional person participating in the group.
The day starts at 10 am and concludes around lunchtime with tea and coffee refreshments provided.
Accommodation is available on the farm in self catering accommodation or in en-suite B&B accommodation in Shippon or Farmhouse to include award winning breakfasts. Courses are not normally available during School or Bank holidays. There will be a 10% reduction in the course fee for people staying on the farm.
