PIGGY WEEKENDS
Smallicombe is home to the well
known Smallicombe Herd of Rare breed pigs. You can have the opportunity
to visit our Rare Breed Pigs in their own surroundings.
We have Berkshire, Middle White and British Lop pigs, breeds being
protected under the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
These weekends allow you the opportunity not normally available
nowadays to see traditional pigs being reared under natural conditions.
You can have a real 'Hands on Experience' or just watch others do the
work!
The accommodation can be B&B or self catering.
In the farmhouse the weekend would normally start with a relaxed
evening on the Friday night, though our Piggy weekends can also be
midweek if preferred, taking the opportunity to browse the wide range
of books and videos on offer.
After a relaxing nights sleep and a full farmhouse breakfast using our
own bacon and sausages you will be able to come and join in with the
regular routine on the farm. You can help as much as you wish or enjoy
watching others work! We breed pigs throughout the year and usually
have litters of rare breed piglets. You will be able to compare the
characteristics of the different breeds and also our individual sows
who have their own distinctive characters. After a busy morning you
will be free to explore the surrounding countryside or the nearby
Jurassic coast. The following you can spend further time with the pigs
and if you wish walk round the farm checking on breeding ewes and the
Ruby Devon cattle.
Self catering accommodation is also available.
We also run courses 'Introduction to Pig
Keeping' which is an ideal start to any prospective smallholder who is
thinking about pig keeping. These like the Piggy Weekends are normally
held between October and March.
