Our Invitation to Visit Smallicombe Farm

We Aren’t Just a Working Farm – We Offer Much More

It was over thirty five years ago since Ian and Maggie moved to Smallicombe Farm, having found an idyllic setting close to the coast between Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. One of the original aims was to be self sufficient in good quality meat to feed their young family from a guaranteed source and to run real farm based self catering and bed and breakfast businesses.

The time has flown by and now the next generation has moved back home with their own children to help manage Smallicombe and its thriving diversified farm activities including bed and breakfast, self catering, breeding stock and meat sales. You shouldn’t leave Smallicombe without buying the delicious rare breed pork sausages or select meat cuts. Also you have a selection of Smallicombe Woollies including scarves, throws, knitted hats and sheep skin rugs all from our Dorset Down flock.

Lambing takes place at Smallicombe in January/February.  You are welcome to come and see the newborn lambs and their mums.  The pigs farrow throughout the year which means that there are usually litters of cute piglets which are a delight to all.

You are welcome to explore the farm and meet a variety of traditional farm animals.  Wildlife abounds; watch out for the roe deer grazing on the edge of the woods next to the farm or spot the buzzards circling above. At night you might even see foxes or badgers passing by on their nightly excursions or hear the owls hooting. In the summer the valleys around the farm have a large number of unusual bats that hibernate in Beer quarry caves in the winter.

In addition to the animals on the farm there is also a farm trail and the Offwell brook runs through the farm to explore. There are 2 chidrens playareas to keep the little ones entertained. We have also a communal decking with spectacular views down the valley, picnic benches and BBQ and pizza oven.

The farm is open all year round and you’ll find whatever the season that the countryside scenes are spectacular. Winter is a great time to visit; the accommodation is always heated to make sure that last minute visitors will be snug and warm.

At Smallicombe we are committed to sustainability having introduced many green initiatives to help protect the environment including installing a Biomass boiler for all the heating and hot water needs. This is powered by wood chip sourced from a local farm in Devon. We’ve also gone one step further by adding photovoltaic to supplement the electrical consumption and where practical, have introduced low energy LED lighting. Matt will be more than happy to explain how it all works.

Ian is passionate about pig breeding and likes to share his knowledge with guests. If you’re planning on starting a small holding or want to know more about the breeding stock for sale, just phone for details.
