April is a spectacular time to explore the farm trail at Smallicombe Farm

April is my favourite time of year for a walk in the ancient woodland at Smallicombe Farm, the captivating sight of a “carpet of blue” as the bluebells spring into life.  This phrase aptly describes the breathtaking scene that unfolds when bluebells bloom en masse, transforming woodland floors into a sea of vibrant blue.

When you are staying in one of our cosy cottages there are a number of onsite experiences including meeting the animals with Farmer Ian, making pizzas in the outside kitchen, relaxing in a woodfired hot tub or exploring our farm trail with its babbling brook, spectacular views and ancient woodland. Every season is different on the farm trail and at this time of year the bluebells transform the woodland creating a tapestry of colour that dances in the dappled sunlight. The air is filled with their sweet, intoxicating fragrance, a perfume that lingers long after the blooms have faded. It’s a sensory symphony, where sight, smell, and sound converge to create an experience that is truly unforgettable.

Bluebells have long been associated with myth, folklore, and symbolism. In Celtic mythology, bluebells were thought to be enchanted flowers, capable of ringing to summon fairies to their gatherings. According to legend, anyone who hears the delicate chime of a bluebell risks being spirited away to the fairy realm. So be careful as our farm trail has many resident fairies, Sophia and Isabella have been custodians of the ancient bluebell wood for many years now….
